Sign language gives me my humanity
Wed 03 Jan 2024Channel 4 Interview with Catherine Drew by Cathy Newman
British Sign Language is to be offered as a GCSE in England from September 2025. It will be open to all pupils, who will learn around a thousand signs.
The government announcement follows years of campaigning by deaf schoolboy Daniel Jillings, who is now 17. And while it may come too late for him, the deaf community is celebrating the new qualification as a way of breaking down barriers.
We spoke to Catherine Drew, who is a deputy head teacher at a school for deaf children in north London, and she joined us with her interpreter.

Sports Day
Wed 07 Jul 2021We held our annual Sports Day in the Sports Hall next to the school. The children in their 3 school houses (Robert Adam House, Sandra David House and Deepa Shastri House) competed in different sports activities and races and had a wonderful day.
The winning house this year is Deepa Shastri House! Well done! Verone List in Year 5 was chosen as Sportsperson of the Year, and was presented with the Jeannie Collier Award! All the children received a Sports Day certificate for participating, and a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal!
Huge thanks go to Ashley Hodgkinson and Seval Ordek-Vasant for organising the day so brilliantly and to all the staff for their support. Next year, we'll invite all the parents to join in the fun!
