PE & Swimming
The School has achieved the Active Sports Mark. Children take part in weekly PE activities including gymnastics, athletics and indoor and outdoor games. We have access to sports pitches at a local primary school. We also provide the children with football coaching and they take part in football competitions with other deaf schools. In the Year 5 and 6 residential journey the children have opportunities to learn a variety of additional sports. All children from Year 1 onwards are taught to swim at the local pool by qualified instructors. Children with physical needs participate in wheelchair football and pentathlon challenge events.
For safety and comfort we insist that all children change into proper clothing for all sports. Shorts and t-shirts for PE may be bought from the school office.
Recent PE and Sports Development
On 16th March 2013, the government announced a renewed package of funding to improve the quality of PE and School Sport for all children in primary schools.
This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport and will be for 2 academic years from September 2013 to August 2015. The funding can only be spent on Sports and PE provision in schools and will be ring-fenced.
The funding is to support the delivery of PE and sport and aims to improve the skills of primary teachers to teach high quality PE and sport and improve the quality of provision for PE and sport in schools and increase participation.
What we will be doing with the funding;
- hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers & TAs when teaching PE
- paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
- running sport competitions, or increasing participation in school games
- buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE/sport
We will be allocated a further £4,716 in April 2014 for our PE & sports development. Staff have worked together and created a list of equipment we would like for the children; we will be working on purchasing the equipment after the February half-term.
Our pupils have thoroughly enjoyed their PE lessons so far, each class has received tennis coaching from Chris James at Panathlon this past term. Next term, our Caterpillars & Beetles will receive Cricket coaching from Mikey at MCB/MCCC Middlesex County Cricket.
